Pediatric Infectious Disease Vaccinations

As many of you know I am passionate about vaccination and specifically childhood vaccinations. Having worked in numerous countries including Kenya, Zambia, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Africa enacting national childhood vaccination programs, I have seen first-hand the benefits of immunization. I have also met people in Africa and on travels to India and Asia that would have been spared polio, cervical cancer, and other diseases if they had been vaccinated.

The Center for Disease Control pediatric immunization schedule with helpful color-coding to depict advisory recommendations can be viewed here.

Some care-givers feel the need to delay or space vaccinations. This is not recommended by the overwhelming majority of the scientific and medical community. The CDC gives a summary of reasons to follow the recommended schedule here. Giving the best care means vaccinating children on time following the CDC guidelines above. This protects children and anyone around them especially those with a potentially weakened immune system including older loved ones.

Please note the Pfizer BioNTech Coronavirus mRNA vaccine is not on the vaccination status, however, the ACIP recommends use of COVID-19 vaccines for everyone ages 5 and older within the scope of the Emergency Use Authorization or Biologics License Application for the particular vaccine. COVID-19 vaccine and other vaccines may be administered on the same day.
